Getting an Understanding of Google

Understanding Google

Before I dive into this and get into the nitty gritty of what it takes to get your HubPage to the first page on Google, I want to give you a better understanding of how exactly Google works. This is a very controversial subject due to Google's strict policy of not releasing information on how their algorithms rank page importance. Achieving a high page rank or achieving a first page placement in Google's Search Engine Results Page (SERP) is a difficult, but not impossible, feat. If all you are thinking about when writing a hub is what is going to get you to the top of the Google SERP, then I promise you that you will have a much harder time doing it. Many people focus too much on using methods such as keyword stuffing and link stuffing to try and trick Google into thinking, because the keyword is on the page so many times, that their page is the most relevant to that keyword. And while this may have worked 5 years ago, Google's algorithms have become so advanced that they will see what you are trying to do and will either ignore your efforts, or possibly even penalize you for trying to artificially manipulate the search engine results!

The best way to achieve a high ranking in Google's SERP is to focus on the consumer, or the reader of your hub. Think about what you would want to see on the page if you were to land on it. Would a page that repeated the same words over and over again, or a page filled with links to the same page, be what you consider to be important or valuable? No. Well, Google doesn't think those pages are important either. Google will instead go out and look for pages that have clear, well written content that is of value to the reader, pages that people find useful and have bookmarked and linked to, pages that have links to valuable resources related to the page, pages that are laid out well and are compliant with Google's policies. Now that you know a little more about how Google works, I will go over some methods to get your hub on the first page of Google's SERP.

Wouldn't You Like To Be At The Top?
Wouldn't You Like To Be At The Top?
Your Hub Page Should Be a Hub of Information
Your Hub Page Should Be a Hub of Information

Become an Authority

The number one thing you should focus on when writing your hubs, is becoming an authority. What I mean by this, is that you should pick 2-3 keywords that you want to really go after and own those keywords. You need to provide as much information as you possibly can about those keywords in your hub. You should add videos related to those keywords, images, RSS feeds, news, links to related websites, ebay and amazon listings related to the keywords. If you are writing about a place or object with a physical location, provide a map of that location, including any other things related to it on the map. You need to focus on becoming the "Hub" of information pertaining to your keywords. I know that many of you are on here to build links to your own website, but remember that to be a hub of information, you must have links to other related companies or websites. If you only put links to your own site, you aren't really creating a "hub" of information, are you? It would be more of an island.

Get Your Hub Out There - Be Social
Get Your Hub Out There - Be Social

Make Friends, be SOCIAL

The second step to getting your hub page to the first page of Google is to spread the word about your hub and generate a buzz. There are many different ways to get people interested in your hub and to generate traffic to it. The easiest way is to put links to your hub on your website(s) and blog(s) that already are ranked well or receive a lot of traffic. If you do not have a website or blog ranked well, I strongly suggest you create one and make it a useful blog or website that is bound to generate some traffic. Some other ways to generate more traffic to your hub, thus increasing your hub score, author score, and ranking on Google's SERP, are as follows:

  • Post a link to your hub on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Digg, etc. All of these sites are in good standing with Google and if your hub provides useful information, it should receive good link juice from these
  • Comment on related hubs, send fan mail to authors that post hubs in similar categories and brag on them a little bit, these little things can help your hubs out exponentially as people will appreciate the feedback and will be more likely to view and post on your hubs
  • Write articles on Ezine articles and other article directories and include links to your hubs, these article directories are invaluable and generate a lot of link juice, Google loves them
  • Just spread the word in as many ways as you can, the more buzz you can generate, the more traffic and link love your hub will get, and the better it will do in Google's SERP

Reach Out to as Many Social Networks as You Can
Reach Out to as Many Social Networks as You Can

Finishing Touches

When you finish your hub, read through it twice, as if you were someone who would be searching for your keyword, and think to yourself, does this page provide me with everything I would be looking for when searching this keyword. If it does not, go back and add more; you cannot have too much information when the page is supposed to be a "hub" of information. The biggest thing to remember here is that not every hub you write is going to make it to number one in Google. There are some keywords that you will never be able to achieve a number one ranking for because the competition for that keyword is too stiff. Do not get discouraged if your hub does not get on the first page, it takes a lot of work to get it there. Keep at it even if you do not see immediate results! This is important, because you have to remember that it takes time to generate a lot of buzz and for Google to see how valuable your page is. If anyone else has anything to add, please comment and leave feedback and I will be sure to reply!

This is good job on a tough subject.

Whether it really works, try it.

I do agree that the linking aspect is very important, but only as a mechanism for google.

I guess that there is very little that an algorithm can do when it treats a website like a black box. I mean that it really can't judge the beauty of its artwork, or the organization of it material, and other attributes that are appreciated by the human eye and the human mind.

The search engine has to do it rating on content and only at the word or phrase level. It cannot judge the quality of the content just the number of keypoints that it is programmed to find.

Weighting the top part of the page for content as opposed to content at the bottom of the page, makes sense but it ruins the art of putting images at the top of the web page.

Welcome to hubpages

Really resourceful hub. I like your use of pictures too. The "hub" one is cool. Also, it is good information. Learning how to rank better in Google is pretty dang important. Definitely like the idea of reading twice. No matter what reason! I see people who have obviously not read theirs once.

Thanks OpinionDuck! Google has very complicated algorithms and keeps them cloaked in secrecy pretty well. That's why it is important to listen to the guys at Google, like Matt Cutts, and take their advice; they know a thing or two about it! Thanks for the welcome!

Glad to provide it Susan52! And yes, the little finishing touches can make or break a hub! Ipeoney - Thanks! I am glad I could provide you with some good info!

Peggy W - Thank you! I am hoping this one reaches first page eventually, however it is a VERY competitive topic! That's great that you have reached the first page with some of yours, it is an accomplishment to be very proud of! And yes, if you are writing to make money, the above methods are not optimal, they are mainly for building traffic and followers.

I agree on you cannot have too much information in a hub. While it is often not possible to present 100% truth facts, information is what keep a hub from devolving into a blank slate. The hard part is making the information enticing and entertaining.

Thanks for the tips!

The hardest thing about all this is finding the time to do it all. It's very time consuming, especially when you have many keywords to concentrate on like we do at my company. I suppose you can't rank for everything though, unless you have a big team working on it.
